TAGLIO-ISOLACCIO

Composed of 2 former villages (Taglio and Isolaccio) facing each other on the highest part, Taglio-Isolaccio stretches from the mountains to the sea and has always been known in Corsica for the quality of its singers and poets of both secular and sacred songs.

The traditional Corsican polyphonic singing (la paghjella) is passed down from generation to generation, and the group I Muvrini, originally from our village, makes it resonate worldwide by blending modernity with tradition.
Charming Corsican village with church bell tower, stone buildings, and traditional architecture in Taglio Isolaccio

The bell tower of the church in Taglio is said to be the origin of the village's name. A legend claims that during a quarrel, a simple-minded villager barricaded himself in the bell tower of the church and rang the bells non-stop to express his anger. The villagers, trying to reason with him and force the bell tower door, began shouting "u tagliu, u tagliu!" ("we will destroy the bell tower!") to make the simpleton believe that if he did not come out, the bell tower would be destroyed. This legend also gave birth to a Corsican proverb "Ché tu sia straziatu cum’è e campane di Tagliu" ("May you suffer like the bells of Taglio").

Must see:

The Romanesque church San Mamiliano (Taglio) and its 38m bell tower (18th century). It features a rare classified painting "The Virgin Breastfeeding" (oil on canvas from 1682), a painting of the Virgin of the Rosary by Giacomo Grandi (1760), a polychrome wooden statue of the Virgin (1.10m), and a pulpit in "stucco lustro" (an ancient technique from the 16th century by Roman craftsmen using marble powder to create a very smooth, highly colored stucco, similar to Moroccan Tadelakt).

Parc Galea, this must-see cultural spot in Corsica, opened in 2012, is a unique concept in the Mediterranean blending nature and culture. Thematic pavilions trace the history of the Island of Beauty while exploring the fauna, flora, and their scents in a 9-hectare park where olive trees and cacti coexist. The motto of this unique place: the transmission of knowledge in a practical and educational way through large-scale playful workshops (2 minutes away).

CORSICA REGIONAL NATURE PARK

Located 6 km away (9 minutes) and created in 1972, it is one of the first French regional nature parks recognized for its high heritage and landscape value, as well as its fragility, covering 365,000 hectares (almost 40% of the territory) and 145 municipalities.

The island's location in the biodiversity hotspot of the Mediterranean has allowed for an exceptional biodiversity to thrive, with an especially high rate of endemism in Europe.

Beyond its mission of preserving, protecting, and safeguarding wildlife, flora, and rural built heritage, the park is the leading hiking operator in Corsica, with over 1,500 km of marked trails, including the famous GR 20, Mare a Mare, Mare e Monti.

CANONICA CHURCH

19 km (17 min.) away, this Romanesque monument is one of the oldest in Corsica (12th century) and is also known as the Cathedral of Santa-Maria-Assunta de Lucciana.

Its dimensions are impressive: 35 meters long and 13 meters wide. Above the entrance door, you'll notice a semi-circular arch decorated with tracery, topped by an archivolt sculpted with a frieze of fantastical and real animals, including a lamb carrying a cross.

The church is surrounded by paleo-Christian remains dating from the 4th century, mainly the Roman foundations of the ancient settlement of Mariana, the remains of an ancient basilica and a baptistery.

Also of note is the Church of San Parteo (also 12th century), 300 metres to the west, which has unfortunately been poorly promoted and restored in an anarchic fashion.
